Following a small amount of recent SEO slavery, we are now proud to announce that we have claimed the 3rd spot on Google’s search result listing for the search term “Web design Kent”. This is an astonishing achievement for us here at Surfmarketing, being a Kent-based web design firm. All this has taken not only a huge amount of time and effort from our team over a long period of time but also a great deal of serious SEO know-how.
We’ve had to build backlinks, contribute content and survey Sitemaps for quite a while now, but as you can see, if you carry on putting the effort in then the results carry on getting better! There are a few rules of SEO you should stick by, if you want to make it to the top few results like us…
When using the many new SEO tips that are constantly floating over the net, you need to ask, can any of these actions relate my site to a possibly untrustworthy source. Once you have been hit with the label of “Untrusted site” or “Spammer”, it's almost impossible to shake off. Always think, and do lots and lots of research, before associating with any other sites, as many people have made this mistake before and have been unable to recover.
Always spend time generating new, high-quality backlinks as this is one of the most important factors in SEO. Use lots of high page-rank sites that let you publish a small amount of content with links included, always include the links. When you do this regularly on lots of these sites, you will see a difference in the way the search engines consider your backlinks, they will rate them with a higher quality and your page-rank will be higher. There is a site that will tell you what page-rank any site is, technorati.com, so use it to find which content-publishing sites have the highest page-rank themselves, as backlinks coming from higher page-rank sites will have more SEO value.
Keep your content up to date. People are interested in fresh, new, up-to-date content and news, and people like to share what they are interested in with other people. This starts off the massive pyramid-shaped chain reaction of sharing we so commonly see on social networking sites like Facebook. All these people that share you’re content are generating good-quality backlinks every time they post some of your content. Then there are the people that know them that are interested, so they share the content further, and so on until you’re left with a long chain of backlinks. That is, if your site’s content is good enough.
A last little hint is to not use flash, Ajax, or anything like it for your homepage or for landing pages. The reasoning behind this is that the search engines cannot see anything on a whole page of just flash. If they cannot see anything, then they do not rate that page as relevant for the search term in question. This can affect your page-rank severely and you will be penalized until the search engine can confirm that the page is relevant to the search term or your keywords.
That’s all for now, but if you ever want to see what’s happening in the ever-changing, madcap world of SEO, right now, then don’t forget to visit our SEO Blog.
