You may have heard of Ping.FM since our latest social networking seminar, but for those of you that don’t know, Ping.FM is a free social networking service that allows you to update multiple social networks like Facebook, Flickr, MySpace, Bebo, etc. Recently some software has been released to enable the use of Ping.FM on smartphones.
There are two apps currently on the market, one for iPhones and the other for Google Android platform phones. The main difference is that the iPhone app, Pingle, made by curioussquid, costs $1.99, and Pingdroid, for android is free. If you use Ping.FM it's a handy way to be able to update your social media, whenever, wherever, and you shouldn’t be missing out. We will go through how to set up and use both apps, starting with the Android app. This walkthrough guide is only for the Android and iPhone apps and not for Ping.FM.
To download Pingdroid, go to the market app on your phone and search for “Pingdroid”, then download it. After you have downloaded and installed it, the settings screen will appear and ask for a four-character mobile key. You will need to log in to your Ping.FM account, on a computer, to get your mobile key. If you can not figure out how to do this, go to
http://ping.fm/key/. Next click the ‘generate key’ link that comes after the words ‘mobile key:’ and the code will appear. You will need to enter this code into your phone quickly, as it expires after just ten minutes. Then click the save button on the app settings screen, and you will be connected to your Ping.FM account. After that it's the same as posting on Ping.FM normally, just select type of post, what social media sites to post to, add pictures, etc. and away you go. You will also want to choose whether Pingdroid uses coarse location (not the exact place you are, just the area) or fine location (exactly where you are), to show your location, as you may not want people to know your precise location.
To download Pingle, go to the Apple App store and search for ‘Pingle’, then download. After installation, the setting screen will also appear. Try the above mentioned method, going to
http://ping.fm/key/ on a computer when logged in to Ping.FM, and then clicking the ‘generate key’ link and then entering this code into the app. If this crashes, like it has been known to, then you will need to do things a little differently. Go back to the URL
http://ping.fm/key/ and there will be a long code at the top of the page that looks something like this “a123b4c6defghi7j8kl901m2n34o56p7-1234567890”, it is labelled
Desktop / Web Key. Write that long code down somewhere.
Now go to your iPhone’s main settings application and scroll down until you find Pingle, and click it. Now you will be on Pingle’s settings. Click on ‘Maintenance’, then under ‘Maintenance’, click ‘Debug’. At the top of the current screen there should be a text field that is labelled ‘Ping.FM App Key ‘. Click this field and then type out the ultra-long code that you took down from the top of the page
http://ping.fm/key/. Now, you should be all set up to use Pingle, and you can start straight away. You will want to select the amount of ‘fuzz’. This is how precisely people will see your location, the more ‘fuzz’, the more vague your location will be, if there is less ‘fuzz’, your location will be more precise.
If you have any further questions or problems then leave a comment or email us. Have fun Pinging!
